Yes, it’s a very good way to get the impression of a lot of fragrance in one go. Most perfume shops/showrooms will assist you by spraying the perfume on a paper sheet and you can sniff them.
However, there’s a big caveat. In that way, while you can test the opening notes, you can’t really tell how it will be when it dries down after a couple of hours. How the base notes will affect the smell. Also how the perfume performs on your skin and for how long. So the real-world experience may well be quite different from the first sniff, unless you wear it, give it a test ride, and see how it turns out.
